Chief Executive

Richard has been working in the third sector for more than two decades, joining Sarcoma UK as their Chief Executive in July 2018 after eight successful years at the national blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan.

Leading an 80-strong team as the charity’s Director of Engagement, he was responsible for overseeing communications, fundraising and marketing, helping the charity to dramatically increase the recruitment of stem cell donors from 20,000 per year to 80,000.

Prior to that he was a Director at health communications agency, MHP and spent 11 years as the Director of Policy and Public Affairs at Cancer Research UK.

He is Chairman of Emilia Clarke’s charity, SameYou, which is dedicated to increasing access to rehabilitation services after brain injury and stroke for young people. He is also a board member of SPAEN, the European network of sarcoma patient advocacy groups. For a number of years he has also been a judge for the Kingston Smith Creative Vision Awards which awards charities with free short animated films.

Richard enjoys cooking, park running and listening to music. He is a proud northerner but doesn’t go back to the north east anywhere near enough. He lives in Devon with his partner.

Director of Research, Policy and Support

Sorrel joined Sarcoma UK in February 2020 as our Director of Research and Policy. She brings a background in academic research and completed her Ph.D. in Developmental Biology at the National Institute for Medical Research. After deciding she wanted her work to make more of a direct impact, she moved into the charity sector. She spent eight years working at the MS Society, where she focussed on communicating research to patients before moving into research management.

Sorrel leads our research, policy, information and support programmes, working closely with the scientific and clinical community as well as with patients, to ensure that we use our funds to drive forward progress for people affected by Sarcoma. She has a passion for patient involvement and working in collaboration to achieve impact.

Sorrel lives in north London and likes to get outdoors as much as she can, spending her weekends running, hiking, or visiting her family in the Cotswolds. 

IT and Database Manager

Part of the team from the beginning in 2010, Lorena set up our office in London.  With her background in office management and operations, Lorena keeps our day-to-day business running smoothly. 

Lorena is our IT guru, implementing and managing Raisers Edge as well as designing and restructuring our office layout to fit in our ever increasing staff team!

Guitar Hero, teaching Spanish and London mews are a few of her favourite things!

Community and In Memory Fundraising Officer

After graduating with a degree in Psychology in 2015, Emma started her career in fundraising with a volunteer work experience placement at Sarcoma UK working in the Community Fundraising team. Over the next couple of years, Emma continued to work in charity fundraising while keeping her link with Sarcoma UK, a charity close to her heart.
Emma is delighted to be back with the charity where she looks after all the amazing community fundraisers across the country.
In her spare time, Emma enjoys seeing musical theatre shows. She can often be found exploring London on days out or walking in the forest near where she lives. She is also a keen baker and enjoys making cakes and treats for the office team.

Database Officer

Natalie is part of the Ops team working alongside Lorena. She has worked in the third sector for over 10 years in various IT and administration roles.

Using her database experience, she is taking on the challenge of working with Raiser’s Edge, the fundraising and CRM tool used by Sarcoma UK.

In her spare time, she enjoys going to the cinema and theatre, meeting up with friends and curling up with a good box set.

Early Diagnosis Officer

Megan graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Politics and International Relations, and then completed her MA at the University of Amsterdam in Holocaust and Genocide Studies. She has since gone on to work at the Wellcome Trust, the University of Melbourne and Freedom from Torture.

Megan’s current role at Sarcoma UK focuses on bringing the sarcoma community together to improve the speed and accuracy of the diagnosis of sarcoma.  

Digital Communications Manager

Enda has worked in the digital sector for over 15 years and as a result has a digital footprint that's way too large.

Before moving to London from Ireland in 2009, he worked in the education sector where he got to explore the impact of digital tools and social media on learning. He's immersed himself ever since in the power of online communication to encourage creativity, share stories and form communities. He was recently honoured with an Inspiring Communicator award from CharityComms for his use of 'master storytelling use his passion for communications to raise awareness of sarcoma'.

Ironically, he's a big lover of music on vinyl and has a collection that's getting a little unwieldy. 

Sarcoma Specialist Nurse - Support Line

Sam is our first nurse specialist. She comes to us having worked with sarcoma patients for 17 years at the Royal Marsden Hospital and before that she worked with teenagers and young adults with sarcoma at UCH.

Sam is passionate that all patients with a sarcoma diagnosis have access to a specialist nurse and team to be able to support them through the best option for them. 

Sam has recently been part of the European consensus group for demoid tumours and was a specialist advisor for NICE standard for improving care for sarcoma patients.

Sam is often found on her bike training for long distance rides like to London to Paris or Somerset to London.  Other passions include baking and Arsenal!

Executive Officer and HR Support

Katie joined Sarcoma UK in April 2015, bringing her experience in business administration. She provides personal assistance support to Richard, as well as working closely with the Senior Management team. Katie is our main point of contact for our Board of Trustees, and manages our governance administration.  

On weekends you will mostly find her taking yoga classes and enjoying long walks in the countryside.

Trusts and Foundations Officer

Ikram gained a key interest in fundraising at the disability charity Scope, whilst working in their philanthropy department. She then moved onto the trusts and statutory team at St John Ambulance.

In her current role at Sarcoma UK, Ikram will be focusing on working to develop our trusts and foundations portfolio, and managing the trust grant cycle. In her spare time, Ikram enjoys spending time with friends and family. She also loves learning new languages and travelling. 

Information and Support Officer

After graduating with a degree in Psychology from the University of Sussex, Sarah began her career working for Macmillan Cancer Support as a Monitoring and Evaluation Intern. Deciding she wanted to continue her career in the charity sector, Sarah started working for the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton, before becoming the Volunteering Services Development Lead for London and the South East, where she helped to identify gaps in support, and implement the successful delivery of volunteering services.

Sarah’s current role at Sarcoma UK involves developing and delivering the charity’s information and support services for people with sarcoma, their families and carers.

In her spare time, Sarah enjoys session singing and cooking.

Philanthropy and Partnerships Manager

Genevieve (known as Gen) joined Sarcoma UK in 2018. Originally trained in Trust and Foundations fundraising, Gen now works closely with our Senior Leadership Team to deliver partnerships with Major Donors, Corporates and Foundations. Gen leads on our Glitter Ball Committee and supports our Genomics Development Board. Her private sector experience means she is entrepreneurial and always looking for new opportunities.

Outside of Sarcoma UK Gen is Deputy Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy and Community Wealth Building at the London Borough of Newham. She can be found directing policy or campaigning on the streets with her dog. Gen enjoys hiking, snowboarding and helping people – when she has the time to do so.

Support Line Advisor

Carly studied Midwifery at Nottingham University, qualifying in 2006 and returning home to Cambridgeshire to commence her career, working between the community and hospital settings. She relished the opportunity to complete an Obstetric Ultrasound course in 2009, scanning and practising as a Midwife on the Day Assessment Unit for many years. During this time, bereavement care became her primary focus and in 2018 she was appointed as the Bereavement Specialist Midwife, a new position created at the Trust. In this role, she worked within a multidisciplinary team and built supportive relationships with baby loss groups, charities and volunteers to enhance the care provided to families, also facilitating a local bereavement steering group.

Carly is committed to providing personalised care thus identifying and responding to a patient’s individual needs and wishes and empowering clients by providing them with honest and thorough information. She believes in promoting continuity of care, supporting informed choices and acting as an advocate for clients. She has completed a mentorship course, facilitated health promotion seminars in schools and provided annual bereavement care updates for medical and midwifery staff. Her work as a Supervisor of Midwives enabled Carly to network with colleagues working at other Trusts and fulfil the desire to support the professional development of peers and provision of safe, holistic care.

Carly is a Trustee for MAMA Academy, a charity that proactively and compassionately engages with health professionals and supporters to ensure more babies arrive safely. She enjoys spending time with her young family, playing at local parks and visiting new places. She loves sports and fitness, particularly hockey, cycling and running.

Events Manager

Louisa graduated from the University of Lincoln with a first class degree in Media Production, before joining the third sector, working for a small environmental charity on the Essex and Suffolk border. It was here that she gained her strong passion for charity work, particularly in fundraising.

When not using her fundraising skills at the charity, you’ll find Louisa playing sports like football and netball, listening to podcasts and travelling.

PR & Communications Officer

Rory graduated from SOAS, University of London, with a degree in Social Anthropology. He has also recently completed his MA at the University of Westminster in Media, Campaigning and Social Change.

Whilst undertaking his MA, Rory completed an internship at gynaecological cancer charity The Eve Appeal, where he worked as Communications and Media Intern. This experience enhanced Rory’s desire to work in the charity sector. He is passionate about helping to transform the future of those affected by cancer. 

Finance and Administration Officer

Steve has a background in Marine Biology that led to his involvement in marine conservation projects around the world.

After managing a research project on manta rays for 6 years, he felt it was time to assist another charitable organisation and gain experience while doing so. Using the knowledge of managing marine projects, he is now part of the Ops team assisting Karen with our finances.

Outside of work, Steve is a keen swimmer and freediver. In fact, he enjoys pretty much anything to do with the water.

Policy and Public Affairs Manager

Bradley is the first member of our Policy and Public Affairs team. Bradley specialises in cancer and rare disease policy and commissioning, having previously worked at Prostate Cancer UK and national blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan. He also has experience in global health policy and market access providing services to some of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies.

Bradley is passionate about improving patient outcomes and access to services by engaging with Parliamentarians and the health service. His particular interest surrounds access to treatments and psychological support.

In his spare time, Bradley can be found gigging with his function band or jazz groups, or working his way through every cookbook he can get his hands on.

Research Officer

After graduating from the University of Exeter with a Biological Sciences degree, Kate wanted to explore how the world of scientific research can connect with the public, and so went on to complete a master’s degree in Science Communication at Imperial College London.

Her role involves managing our grant funding rounds and portfolio of research grants, and keeping up to date with and communicating their exciting progress in sarcoma research.

In her spare time, Kate enjoys choral singing, baking and meeting up with friends. She also enjoys fitness and you’ll often find her running or walking around her local park.

Director of Fundraising and Communications

Kerry has worked in the third sector for more than 15 years, joining Sarcoma UK as their Director of Fundraising in April 2018 after six successful years at director of fundraising, communications and medical marketing at Mildmay Hospital.

Kerry's first task at Mildmay was the completion of a capital appeal to build a purpose built HIV hospital based in East London.   She was delighted to welcome HRH Prince Harry to officially open the new hospital in December 2015. In addition to funding Mildmay UK work, Kerry has supported the Mildmay teams in East Africa to enable them to support over 100,000 people living with and affected by HIV in East Africa.  

Kerry lives in Essex although she is not found there much. She spends most of her free time at her caravan based in North Norfolk either walking her elderly Westie by the sea or cycling around the villages. Kerry's eldest daughter in currently finishing her degree at Brighton university whilst her youngest daughter is travelling and working in Australia.

Sarcoma Specialist Nurse - Support Line Lead

Helen was the first specialist nurse for the Oxford Sarcoma Service and helped to grow the Oxford service from a newly nationally commissioned bone and soft tissue sarcoma service in 2005; leading her to be named The Nursing Times Cancer Nurse Leader of the Year (2010).

Having always advocated for people affected by sarcoma, working with sarcoma patients over the past 18 years (12 of which were in her Advanced Practice role), she brings a wealth of experience to the charity.  Helen looks forward to using her knowledge in sarcoma to help increase the level of expertise to the charity’s Support Line service.

Helen became the founding Chair of the National Sarcoma Forum, a group for health professionals working with sarcoma patients in the UK and passed the Chair over in 2015.

Her husband and two young daughters keep her busy, she looks forward to working in a professional capacity alongside enjoying watching her daughters grow up.

Director of Finance and Resources

Karen is in charge of our charity’s finances.  With over a decade of experience of working in the charity sector, Karen came to us from her previous position as Finance Manager at the Sick Children’s Trust.

In her spare time, Karen likes to see friends and family.  She also enjoys going to festivals, combining her love for travelling and live music.
